How frustration, a wooden racket, and a vision for something better became True Beginner Tennis for Women.

Tennis didn’t meet me where I was—so I built a space where women could be met with grace, not judgment.

– Rebecca Boyce

TL;DR – Rebecca Boyce created True Beginner Tennis after years of searching for a program that respected women just starting out. This blog shares how her personal struggle to find quality instruction evolved into a thriving tennis community built on empathy, structure, and progress.

Why I Started True Beginner Tennis

I didn’t set out to start a tennis program. I just wanted to find one that worked for me.

After picking up my first wooden racket at age 11, I spent years trying to fit into a tennis world that never quite welcomed late bloomers. As a woman learning to play as an adult, I encountered more eye-rolls than encouragement, more chaos than clarity.

I realized something was missing—not just for me, but for so many women like me.

The Problem I Couldn’t Ignore

Direct Answer: True Beginner Tennis was created to give women a structured, supportive entry point into tennis, free of pressure and judgment.

Most recreational programs weren’t designed for true beginners. Group classes often lumped players together regardless of skill, making it hard to learn and easy to feel out of place.

And while private lessons were available, they weren’t always financially accessible—or emotionally welcoming.

I saw a need: a program that made room for women at every level, especially at the very beginning.

Turning Frustration into a Framework

I went back to school and earned my Master’s in Sports Management, focusing on the barriers that keep women from participating in sport. Then I became certified through the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR).

With knowledge, empathy, and a clipboard in hand, I launched True Beginner Tennis in 2011 with the support of the City of Miami Beach Parks & Recreation Department.

It started small—but it resonated.

A Place Where Women Could Start Without Apology

We built the program around clarity and comfort. Five levels. Small groups. Female-led coaching. A no-pressure environment where technique, structure, and laughter could coexist.

Over the years, hundreds of women have picked up a racquet with us—many for the first time. Some came afraid. Most left smiling. Many stayed, moved up in skill, and discovered confidence they didn’t know they had.

Building Belief Alongside Backhands

Tennis is more than a sport. It’s movement. It’s growth. It’s a mirror that reflects how we show up, even when we’re unsure of ourselves.

I didn’t create TBT to compete with existing programs. I created it because too many women were being left behind by them.

And every time I see a woman at Pink 1 graduate to Red, or Orange to Green, I’m reminded why this work matters.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

That quote has anchored me for years. Dreams don’t come with easy directions. They come with quiet nudges and moments of clarity. TBT was my nudge.

And it became something beautiful.

If you’ve ever felt like the world wasn’t built for you, maybe it’s time to build something better. That’s what I did with True Beginner Tennis—for myself and for women like you.
